Mrs. Karen Voigt
Mrs. Karen Kosinuk Voigt has proudly been an educator for over 40 years. Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, she was valedictorian of her high school class at Collingdale High School where her school colors were blue and orange. At Penn State, she earned a B.S. in secondary education with a concentration in French. As a French teacher at Livonia High School, New York, she continued her studies at S.U.N.Y. – Geneseo where she earned a M.S. in elementary education with reading specialist certification. While teaching fifth grade and gifted in Iberia Parish, Louisiana, she added certifications in ESL and gifted education. She was parish coordinator of the gifted program her last year in Louisiana which included 25 schools. In 1989, she received the honors of Outstanding Young Educator from the New Iberia Jaycees, Teacher of the Year from the Iberia Parish School Board, and state finalist in the Louisiana State Teacher of the Year program.
With a return to Pennsylvania in 1993, she began her Pennsylvania career at Mountain View Jr./Sr. High School as a curriculum coordinator, Title I coordinator, and seventh/eighth grade Title I reading and math teacher. She added certifications in the following years in mid-level math, administration, and superintendent’s letter of eligibility while attending the University of Scranton. In 2007-2008, she officially became an administrator as Director of Curriculum & Instruction/Federal Programs Coordinator. The following year NEIU #19 recognized her as Arts Administrator of the Year for her support of the arts in education. In 2014, she was named Acting Superintendent and then Superintendent, her current position.
Mrs. Voigt is married to John O. Voigt, geologist and executive director of Solution Mining Research Institute. They reside in Clarks Summit where they have three children, all graduates of Penn State, and four grandchildren. Mrs. Voigt enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with family.
